What is MDMA?

MDMA is a synthetic drug that acts as a stimulant and hallucinogen.15–17 It produces an energizing high, distortions in time and perception, and increased enjoyment of sensory experiences. It has also been described as an entactogen, a drug that can increase self-awareness and empathy.1,2,18

Ecstasy is often used to refer to MDMA in tablet or capsule form, which is the most common way people take the drug.17,19 Researchers have determined that many ecstasy tablets contain not only MDMA in different concentrations but also several drugs or drug combinations that may be harmful. Adulterants found in street-bought ecstasy tablets include methamphetamine, the anesthetic ketamine, caffeine, the diet drug ephedrine,20 the over-the-counter cough suppressant dextromethorphan,21,22 heroin, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine.22
